Chapter 8 Data communication & the
internet
Data communication - ANS-The transmission of data from one place to another via transmission
channels.
Transmission channels - ANS-Methods or media that can be used to move data from one place
to another. E.g. Telephone lines, coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, microwave links and
communication satellites.
Facsimile machine - ANS-A combination of a telephone and photocopier in one. It scans an
image and convert it to an electronic signal. The electronic signal is then send to transmission
lines to the receiving fax machine anywhere in the world. The receiving fax machine then
converts the signal back to an image and prints it on paper.
Pager - ANS-A pager is a small electronic wireless device that can keep you in touch with
people using a paging network. The pager contains a small display window that shows a phone
number or text message.
Cellphones - ANS-Are used like normal telephones to make and receive calls ,send and receive
text message .
Video conferencing - ANS-Communication using the cellphone or computer system using a
camera. It allows people over the world ton hear and see each other in real time.
Internet - ANS-Is the networks of networks that connect computers globally using
communication links such as telephone lines, cables and satellite.
