Business Data Communications and
Networks
Define information lag and discuss its importance - ANS-The time needed for information to
travel.
What is a circuit? - ANS-In simple terms a switch that facilitates a connection (think of a light
switch) a network switch performs the same function, it turns on and directs packets of
information. On a telephone system it routes the connection from one phone unit to another
making the loop of information or communication.
What is a client? - ANS-A client is a devise that connects to the network and uses and shares
information. A computer, a smart phone, a terminal...
What is a host or server? - ANS-A server saves and shares information and preforms services
such as authentication on the network.
Why are network layers important? - ANS-They are the packaging and transporting of
information between the different environments (Cable to Packet to computer to output).
Network layers define how communication will occur and haw transmission is assured.
Name the seven layers in the OSI network model and what they do. - ANS-7 Application

1 Physical
Physical Layer. - ANS-The cables and rules used to move the data across the network., This
layer in the OSI transforms bits into electromagnetic signals.
Data Link Layer. - ANS-This layer sets the rules and sends the data. Not 100% sure but I think
of this layer as the NIC card., layer that packages bit of data from the physical later into frames
and transfers them from one computer to another, and receives knowledgement from the
addressed computer
Network Layer. - ANS-responsible for placing packets on and receiving them from the network
medium
