Business Data Communications &
Networking Ch 8 Terms
Access VPN - ANS-Gives employees access to an organization's networks from a remote
location.
ATM - ANS-Asynchronous transfer mode. A communication switch that handles interface
speeds from 25 million to 622 million bps. Uses cell relay methods to multiplex data streams on
the same BN. Also performs encapsulation, gives great QOS, and provides no error control.
BRI - ANS-Basic Rate Interface, sometimes called basic access service (2B+D). Gives a circuit
with two 64 Kbps channels (called B channels) and one 16 Kbps control signaling channel (D
channel).
B channel - ANS-Part of BRI. Handles digitized voice, data, and image transmissions, giving a
total of 128 Kbps.
D channel - ANS-Part of BRI. Used for control messages such as acknowledgements, call
setup, automatic number identification, and termination.
CRTC - ANS-Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission. Is the FCC of
Canada; a regulatory board that has the power to regulate all interstate and foreign
communication.
CSU/DSU - ANS-Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit. It's the WAN equivalent of a Network
Interface Card in a LAN.
Circuit switched services - ANS-A service where the users lease connection points into the
common carrier's network. Uses the cloud.
Cloud - ANS-Also known as the common carrier's network. A person/computer dials the # of the
destination computer and makes a circuit between the two computers. The computers exchange
data and disconnect.
Data can only be sent to one location while a circuit is established. Are expensive and used
when the network demand is unknown,
Cloud architecture - ANS-Are the parts needed for cloud computing. Parts include: a front end
platform, back end platforms, cloud based delivery, and a network.
