BPT1501
ASSIGNMENT 3
DUE DATE: MARCH 2025

, BPT1501 ASS 3

1. Read the following passage and then respond to the questions based on the given passage.
2. Please make sure you read and did the activities in LESSON 3.

Mr Hlabane is a newly appointed teacher at a public township high school in Johannesburg . The
school has a diverse student body, including learners who migrated from rural places, and
students speak various languages, with English being the medium of instruction. The school faces
challenges such as limited resources, large class sizes, and varying levels of academic
preparedness. Some learners struggle with language barriers, while others may have special
educational needs.

The school has recently introduced a curriculum that encourages student-centered learning, but
there are concerns among some staff members about how to best implement this philosophy in the
classroom. Some teachers believe that a more traditional, teacher-led approach is necessary due to
the school's constraints. Others argue that a constructivist approach, where students actively
construct their own knowledge, would be more beneficial.

QUESTION 1

1. Consider the challenges faced in the school (e.g., large class sizes, language
barriers, diversity of learners, limited resources) How do these challenges impact
teaching and learning? (6 marks) List three impacts.

Less Individual Attention

Since there are many students in one class, the teacher cannot help each learner
properly. This makes it hard for struggling learners to catch up.

Language Problems

Some learners do not understand English well, so they struggle to follow lessons. This
can lead to poor marks and difficulty in sharing their thoughts.
