WEEK 8
REFLECTION ON LEARNING AND PRACTICE READINESS
Introduction
What is your plan for staying connected to emerging research study evidence and non-
research evidence about your selected practice problem? Daily, hundreds of evidence sources
are published on your selected practice problem. How will you stay connected to this
emerging evidence about your practice problem?

The DNP program within Chamberlain College of Nursing has been filled with
immense lessons and unconditional support from faculty, staff, and classmates. It is with gratitude
that the courses we have been in reflect the focus of the DNP degree, which is to prepare DNP-
prepared graduates to practice creating significant and positive outcomes within the practice setting
utilizing the highest level of nursing practice (Giardino and Hickey, 2020). It is with gratitude and
immense joy to enter our last week and present a discussion to reflect on our readiness to practice
as a DNP-prepared nurse through the consideration of what we learned in this course and how this
knowledge will impact our practice as a DNP-prepared nurse. Koshy et al. (2017) presented that
the practice of reflection is a vital part of personal and professional progression. Reflection leads to
the ability to have self-awareness, and knowledge identification, as well as the need to focus on
assessing the learning goals. In this discussion of reflection on the course outcomes review and
experience in the course, the following reflection points will be addressed:

 Analysis and evaluation of how my thinking was challenged about translation
science; summary, analysis, synthesis; and using an evidence-based intervention in a practice
change project to address a practice problem.

 Based on the new knowledge received, examine how the learning process
prepares me to practice as a DNP-prepared nurse. Analysis and evaluation of how my thinking was
challenged about translation science and using evidence-based interventions to address a practice
problem:

 The journey of learning about the different types of translation science theories
and models involved the realization of the importance of thoroughly reading and
analyzing each theory and model and utilizing rationale thinking to choose a
theory/model applicable to the national practice problem of Alzheimer’s disease
and the research practice of maintaining cognitive functioning within our patients
with Alzheimer’s disease.

 The summary of translation science posed significant challenges to my ability to summarize
information and lessons learned. The summary of translation
practices utilizing the chosen translation model (K-T-A) was challenging due to
the fear of the lack of important information needed to present to lead up to the
analysis and synthesis regarding the process of evidence translation. Dr. Malate
and Dr. Gannon along with our classmates were very helpful and encouraging in

, finding the courage and ability to read lessons and take the review to a level of
summarization and synthesis.

 Synthesis formation was one of my biggest challenges within the course and I
feel that I am still growing in the synthesis process, however, I am more
confident and more knowledgeable in taking different research findings and
presenting the findings as one synthesized information. The synthesis of high level research leads
to one of the important outcomes for the DNP-prepared
nurse in forming the relevance of the evidence-based intervention to the
practice problem (Mick, 2017).

 With gratitude to Dr. Malate’s considerate feedback provided to each of us
individually, I can continue to confirm the importance of reading specific
instructions and information necessary to review, analyze, summarize, and
synthesize information from research articles in review.

 My thinking was challenged in the process of synthesizing evidence and
translating evidence in a way where the need to have an organizational
presentation of the key steps in the translation model chosen as well as the
consideration of key roles of the stakeholders involved within the practice
change. As DNP-prepared nurses, we must take the knowledge and skill of
searching for studies about the national practice problem and turn it into
analysis and synthesis of the evidence. Ultimately, once research studies are
located, reviewed, analyzed, and synthesized, the most important next action is
to create solutions to the practice problem.

 Creating solutions for the chosen national practice problem of Alzheimer’s
disease posed lessons that led me to feel even more excited and motivated to
gain the necessary skills and knowledge to search for relevant and applicable
research studies to discover evidence-based interventions as part of the
solutions to the practice problem and translate it into the practice settings for the
practice change project.

 The creation of the PICOT question provided me with the ability to switch my
thinking from overthinking to simplified but direct thinking. The PICOT question
is the guide to being able to research articles relevant to the national practice
problem and allows to lead us into finding solutions through evidence-based
intervention studies in research articles.

Based on new knowledge gained, discuss how this learning prepares the role of the DNP-
prepared nurse:

 With the increase in prevalence and mortality of Alzheimer’s disease along with
the expected continued increase in economic burdens globally and nationally, it
is significant to synthesize evidence-based interventions and translate them
accordingly, into the practice settings to produce positive changes such as the
positive impact on patients’ cognitive functioning (Cass, 2017; Foloppe et
al.,2018; Gronek et al., 2019).
