warms the Earth's surface. It occurs when the sun’s
energy reaches the Earth and is absorbed, while
some of it is re-radiated as infrared radiation.
Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂),
methane (CH₄), and water vapour (H₂O), trap some
of this heat in the atmosphere, preventing it from
escaping into space.
Importance: It maintains Earth's temperature at
a level suitable for life.
