2024.
Time allowed: 21–23 minutes (including 5 minutes’ preparation time at the start of the test)
Instructions
You must not use a dictionary at any time during this test. This includes the preparation time.
During the 5 minutes’ preparation time at the start of the test, you are required to prepare one of
the two cards given to you.
You may make notes during the preparation time only on the Additional Answer Sheet provided.
You must not write on the card.
You may refer to the card and any notes you have made at any time during this section of the

You should hand the stimulus card and the Additional Answer Sheet to the teacher-examiner

The teacher-examiner will ask the questions exactly as they are printed on the card and may ask

You must ask the teacher-examiner two questions arising from the material on the card. You can
ask these questions at any time during the discussion.
To develop the discussion of the sub-theme, you will be expected to respond to questions and
discuss in German broader issues within the sub-theme on the card.

For A-level German Paper 3: Speaking (June 2024), focus on the following key areas:
1. Topic Preparation:
General Themes: Prepare to discuss a variety of topics such as family, education, society, culture,
politics, and current events in German-speaking countries.
Personal Reflection: Be ready to provide personal opinions and experiences related to the themes.
Be able to give specific examples to support your views.
Detailed Knowledge: Study in-depth topics that are commonly examined in the speaking
component, such as social issues, technology, environmental concerns, and aspects of German
culture and history.
2. Structure and Organization:
Clear Introduction: When answering a question or starting a topic, begin with a clear introductory
statement. For example, "Meiner Meinung nach…" or "Ich denke, dass…".
Developing Ideas: After your initial response, expand on your answer by explaining your reasoning,
offering examples, and presenting other perspectives.
Conclusion: Conclude your responses with a summary or final thought, such as, "Zusammenfassend
lässt sich sagen, dass…" or "Abschließend denke ich, dass…".
3. Fluency and Spontaneity:
Natural Flow: Practice speaking spontaneously and without hesitation. Aim to sound natural and
confident when speaking about familiar topics.
Avoid Memorized Answers: Although practicing set answers is helpful, avoid memorizing responses
verbatim. The examiners will be looking for a natural conversation, not recited speeches.
Engage in Dialogue: During the interactive part of the exam, engage actively with the examiner’s
questions. Make sure to listen carefully and respond in depth.
4. Pronunciation and Intonation:
Clear Pronunciation: Work on your German pronunciation to ensure clarity. Pay attention to vowel
sounds, stress, and word endings. Common mistakes can include mispronouncing compound words
or incorrect stress patterns.
Intonation: Use natural intonation to avoid sounding monotonous. Vary your pitch, particularly when
emphasizing key points.
