Rate Law Day 2 Summary
Quesitons
1. What values did you obtain for A and E a? Provide a brief description of how you
obtained these values, along with any plots and/or calculations that support your
conclusions.
This is included later in the Summary.
2. What are the units of A?
The units of a are the same as K for the reaction, making them M -1 * s-1 since it is a
second-order reaction.
3. What are the units of Ea?
The units of Ea are J/mol, but can be converted to kJ/mol.
4. Possible sources of error came in many places, from possible imprecise
measurements to temperatures not being exact, to interpreting the Pressure vs
time graphs wrong, making the best-fit line of the incorrect section of the graph.
Procedure
1. First the group obtained 2 thermometers, 2 pipettes, 2 10 mL graduated
cylinders, 2 50 ml beakers, 10 small test tubes, two large test tubes, about 20 mL
of H2O2 and 20 mL of KI, pressure sensor, and logger pro
2. Obtained a pyrex container and created an ice bath that is 10 oC, so that other
groups can put their own test tubes inside the ice bath
3. Put 2 mL of H2O2 in 4 individual test tubes and 2 mL of KI in separate 4 individual
test tubes
4. Took two test tubes filled with H 2O2 and two test tubes filled with KI and put them
into the 10oC ice bath
5. Took one test tubes filled with H 2O2 and one test tubes filled with KI and tested
the reaction at room temperature, 25 oC, using one of the large test tube
6. Calculated the reaction rate using Logger Pro and a pressure sensor that
connected the test tube to the computer
