1.1 FIVE Important Contributions of Agriculture in the
Structural Transformation of Developing Countries
Agriculture plays a critical role in the structural
transformation of developing countries by serving as the
foundation for economic growth, poverty alleviation, and social
development. Here are five important contributions of
agriculture to this transformation, with one practical example for
each variable:

, 1. Economic Growth and Development
 Contribution: Agriculture is a key driver of economic
growth in many developing countries, especially in the
early stages of industrialization. It provides a significant
portion of national income, exports, and jobs, thereby
laying the foundation for further industrial development
and urbanization.
 Example: In Ethiopia, agriculture contributes about 40%
of the GDP and employs over 70% of the population. The
country's emphasis on agricultural exports like coffee has
significantly driven economic growth and helped spur
infrastructural development.

2. Employment Generation
 Contribution: Agriculture serves as a primary source of
employment for a large proportion of the population in
developing countries. By offering employment
opportunities, it directly contributes to poverty reduction
and increases household income levels.
 Example: In India, over 60% of the labor force is
employed in agriculture. Smallholder farmers and
agricultural workers in rural areas benefit from direct
employment, and this large sector fuels the growth of
agribusinesses and agro-processing industries.
