Identify and define the local problem you will address in
your analysis.
In 2022, the Sacramento County Mental Health Board described that
40% of all students in the 300 schools reported feeling hopeless,
sad, and had suicidal ideation. The highest percentage of students
reporting mental health issues were female students.
Include background information about the problem.
The Sacramento County Mental Health Board reported in the
California Health Kids Survey (CHKS) on the mental state of the
students in Sacramento County. CHKS said that over 35-40% of
the students were suffering from chronic hopeless and sad
feelings, especially in students of mixed races, all special
populations (homeless and foster care), and Hispanic or Latino
(Sacramento County Mental Health Board, 2022). Homeless, foster
care, sexual orientation (LGBTQ), and gender identity students
were shown to have the highest range of 50-70%. Females showed
the highest cases, ranging from 45-50%. Suicidal ideation for
white students raged from 19- 24%, Hispanic or Latino showed 21-
24%, and mixed races and female students ranged from 20-25%
each (Sacramento County Mental Health Board, 2022).
Describe why the topic is important.
The nurse's key role is to promote mental health when working
with the young, but there is still a lack of a comprehensive
understanding of the nurse's role. Nurses are the first to identify
mental health issues, but they lack essential mental health
promotion resources (Anttila et al., 2020).
65% of the students in Sacramento County have access to Medi-
cal. However, only 6% of the students reach out to mental health
services. The Data suggest that there 20% of school-aged
students diagnosed with mental health disorders have not
received mental health services, and during COVID-19, children
experienced a mental health exacerbation crisis. The Sacrament
County Office of Education began to face the shortage of mental
health clinicians in its 300 schools. To be able to tackle the issue,
the Sacrament County Office of Education partnered with
California's Medicaid and Medi-Cal programs to recruit mental
health clinicians and licensed therapists to fill positions for the
school-based wellness centers (Prabha, 2024). The goal of the
Sacrament County Office of Education is to have a support service
available in the classroom and specialized prevention and
intervention services in-school locations. The school system wants
to offer mental health services at every school site, but it has
become difficult due to the shortage of mental health professionals.
