Case
Introduction
Conflicts are inevitable in any society, especially in diverse urban areas where people
from different backgrounds coexist. The case study presents a violent confrontation
between residents and shop owners in Johannesburg’s central business district. The
conflict escalated due to allegations that shop owners were involved in illegal drug
activities. The confrontation resulted in violence, destruction of property, and law
enforcement intervention. However, both parties sought a long-term solution to their
grievances.
One of the most effective strategies for resolving disputes is negotiation. Negotiation
involves discussions between conflicting parties to reach a mutually acceptable
agreement (Fisher, Ury & Patton, 2011). This essay explores how negotiation can be
applied as a conflict resolution strategy by the Community Police Forum (CPF) to
address the ongoing tensions and foster lasting peace.
