163 Week 4.1
Pre-Class Student Worksheets

Note to students: This class session builds on the concept of cognition you learned in Nursing
150. The thinking skills you learned in Nursing 155 are listed within the tasks.
Reading assignments as per weekly outline.
Complete these worksheets. You will share/use your work during class.

Giddens talks about types of cognition, which includes perception, memory, and executive
function.
Define each of these terms:

Perception: Perception is the ability to interpret sensory information from the environment to
understand it in a meaningful way. In healthcare, this means recognizing sounds and using
tactical inputs, so patients remain safe.

Memory: Memory is the process by which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved. It
allows for both patients and healthcare workers to recall info from learned skills and behavior. It
is very important for nurses to have it for critical thinking.

Executive Function: Executive function includes higher-level cognitive processes that enable
individuals to plan, make decisions, solve problems, and regulate emotions and behaviors. For
nursing this is a critical skill because it allows nurse to prioritize patient care nursing and
allowing them to plan out things more efficiently.

Your Williams text looks at two concepts: cognition and perception. If the person cannot
perceive the incoming stimuli, that stimuli are not processed, memorized, and processed with
executive functions to solve problems, make judgments, etc.

Task
Review 194-196 in Williams. Based on the data collection questions, complete the table. In the
left-hand column list factors that can affect perception. In the middle column, list at least three
nursing actions that can be taken to assist with deficits in perception. In the right-hand column,
list other healthcare team members you will work with to ensure the nursing interventions are
carried out, such as RN, nursing assistant, physician, etc. (Do not forget communication -- the
patient may not be fluent in the nurse's language giving the impression the patient cannot hear,
cannot understand, etc. and may be misinterpreted as a problem with perception or cognition.)
