Right-of-Ways
RD = Chapter 2 (pg. 24-39) & Chapter 10 (pg. 210-225)
ROTR = Chapter 4 (pg. 21-39)

, The “UNWRITTEN” Rules of the Road:
► Definition: a Right-of-Way is the legal ability for a pedestrian, bicyclist and/or vehicle(s),
to proceed with precedence over ALL others in a traffic or roadway scenario.

EVERYDAY EXAMPLES???

There is a law that states or gives someone the “right-of-way.”

There is an Right-of-way of who must YIELD to whom.

”YIELD” = SOMEONE HAS TO WAIT FOR
SOMEONE ELSE TO MAKE A DECISION!
► Purpose of Right-of-Ways:
▫ Gives immediate yield (the right-of-way!) to ONE roadway user.
► YOUR Thinking & Mentality:
▫ Never _______ anything & know all drivers “_______” differently…
▫ Always safer to WAIT until you know FOR SURE who has the R-O-W!

, MOST COMMON R-O-W SITUATIONS:
► When a pedestrian(s) is in a marked or unmarked crosswalk at any type of intersection.

► When a vehicle is making a Right turn on a solid red light.

► When more than one driver reaches a 2-way OR 4-way intersection at Different times.
► When more than one driver reaches a 2-way OR 4-way intersection at the Same time.
► When two vehicles, traveling on different roadways, reach an uncontrolled intersection with
the goal of making a turn onto the same roadway – (aka. “Short turn vs. Long turn”).

► When a driver enters an intersection with a flashing Light vs. flashing yellow Arrow.
► When a driver wants to make a LEFT turn, but sees the traffic light change from flashing
yellow-to-solid yellow-to-solid red.– (aka. “the dead zone”).

► When a driver is approaching a Merge sign, wanting to join already established traffic.
► When a driver is approaching a YIELD sign, OR attempting to use a round-a-bout.
► When a vehicle encounters a funeral procession on the roadway.
► When a vehicle is being approached OR is approaching an emergency vehicle.
