Why are they high risk?

Lack support system and seek prenatal care later

- Delay prenatal care (critical to get them the care early= priority for
both mom and baby)
- Higher drop out rate ( so its important to keep them in school= Better
decisions for themselves and baby)
- Assessment in new teen mother?
Positive – bonding with baby, breast feeding, when baby cries- does
she know what to do, development and milestones ( what they know
and understands the needs of infant)
Negative- environment, so support – is dad involved, are there other
children, is home life calm and reassuring or chaotic

Evaluate own feelings FIRST- no prejudgments ( no neg personal
feelings)- understanding of our own feelings

- Health disparities= Population is high risk for depression, anxiety,
increase substance abuse, STDS, homelessness, and reduced access to
healthcare services.
- When working with population, truing to obtain history (assessment)
ask open ended questions
- Review interventions - bullying, harassment, hate crime = support
groups, counseling
- Homosexual behavior is not uncommon in young adolescents (like to
experience all lifestyles) let parent know its not uncommon for this age
- Build trust, ask open ended questions ( ex. Do you have a boyfriend or
girlfriend) + mirror pronouns they use
- Center for disease and control – provide screenings- prevention of STD
– yearly screenings (ups to 3-6 months for high risk: drug use and
multiple partners)
- Asses mental health – connect with support groups that can help



Mental illness:



- Review self awareness when caring for population. ( no preconceived
feelings)
- Interventions for eating disorders – journalling, have them track
nutrition assessment
- Safety precautions suicidal pt= Do you have a plan? Do you have the
means? Have you tried this before? have you discuss plans with
anyone ?
- Safety precautions for suicidal idealizations– in the hospital setting=
are cabinets locked? Is there stuff that can hurt them? Social worker
also
- Caring for clients with delirium tremors ( withdraw tremors) = seizure
precautions – SAFTEY ( bed rails, no sharp objects, put on side )
