The pneumatology fourth editionThis research paper will seek to describe the reasoning that some Bible scholars give for their translation of the Greek word “en” as “in” instead of “by”. “In one Spirit also we all were baptized so as to form one body” (1Corinthians 12:13 New International Version). The project will also attempt to explain the arguments presented by other scholars showing that “en” is also translated as “by” with a citation of four biblical examples that support this view. The paper will go ahead to show how the two presentations of the Holy Spirit change His position, while seeking to answer the question of whether the Holy Spirit is an agent (the one who baptizes) or an element (what an individual is baptized in). The paper will then proceed to identify the baptizer, and the element one is baptized in using selected Bible texts. The last part of the paper will explain if Acts 8:14-17 and 19: 1-7 suggest a distinction between being converted and being filled with the Holy Spirit, with an explanation of the same. 1. Baptism is the Christian practice of being immersed into and out of water. In the Christian realm, baptism signifies being dead to sin. However, several Christian churches have various ways of practicing baptism, with some churches preferring to sprinkle water on their new believers, and others choosing instead to immerse the new converts into water. As much as the methods of baptizing their members vary, most Christians agree that baptism signifies a new life in Christ. Baptism: Three Views (Wright, Ferguson, Ware and Lane, 2009). It is important to note that there is no occurrence of the term baptism in the Holy Spirit in scripture. Biblical scholars suggest that the term originated from a description of the experience predicted by John the Baptist concerning Jesus Christ. John said Jesus would baptize in (Greek “en”) the Holy Spirit. A direct translation of this experience would allude to a baptism in the Holy Spirit because the imagery presented by such a baptism is immersion, and an individual is immersed in not by water. Other New Testament scriptures mention the baptism in the Holy Spirit described by John the Baptist. The Bible says “I baptize you
