Teacher: I heard some great ideas for presents and parties. Wonder if I might get an invite (tongue-in-
cheek).
Cristina what gift did you write down again?
Student: Bicycle.
Teacher: That’s right; and what will you do when you get a bicycle for your birthday?
Student: I will ride to the forest and have a picnic.
Teacher: That sounds wonderful.
So, if Cristina gets a bicycle for her birthday, she will ride it to the forest.
(Teacher writes sentence on board.)
This is called a first conditional. Can anyone tell me when this is happening?
Student: In the future.
Teacher : Very good.
Listen carefully now, I want to explain why and how we use the first conditional.
The first conditional is used in English when you want to talk about something that will very
possibly happen in the future – like making a prediction.
It can also be used to make promises, to warn someone or to make a deal with someone. This is
why we use the first conditional
Does everyone understand?
Student: Yes.
Teacher: Good. We are going to do practice how we produce the different meanings we can use the first
conditional for. We have already made a prediction with Cristina’s example. Say it with me, but
let’s replace Cristina with “I”.
Student: If I get a bicycle for my birthday, I will ride it to the forest.
Teacher: Good. Next I want to make a deal with you. So I really badly want to come to your birthday
party. What must I do to be invited?
Student: If you want to come to my party, you will bring a present.
Teacher: That’s good. Now look at how I change the sentence around and still mean the same thing.
I will bring you a present if you let me come to your party.
(Teacher writes second sentence on the board.)
* I will elicit making a promise and warning in a similar fashion.
* If eliciting doesn’t work I will tell students.
