INTRODUCTION
Psychological assessment has long been a cornerstone of organisational decision-making,

Africa, however, the deployment of psychological assessments has a checkered history
due to the country’s complex socio-political past and the diverse, multicultural reality that
shapes its workplaces today. Against this backdrop, questions surrounding the fairness,
validity, and reliability of psychological assessments remain critically important. The
objective of this essay is to examine the nature and value of psychological assessment in
South African organisations by exploring how assessment instruments have evolved, how
they have sometimes been misused, and what has been done to ensure fairness in a
multicultural context.
To achieve this objective, this essay begins by defining and clarifying the purpose of
