Cardiovascular System

, The process of breathing, though automatic, involves an intricate coordination of vital organs,
including the gut, brain, bones, lungs, blood, and heart, to deliver oxygen throughout the
body. Oxygen is essential for aerobic respiration, a process that produces ATP to power
cellular functions. Since oxygen can only efficiently diffuse over tiny distances, the body
relies on an extensive network of red blood cells, each containing hemoglobin to bind and
transport oxygen. This journey begins in the gut, where nutrients from food, like iron (vital
for hemoglobin production), are absorbed and sent to hematopoietic tissues in the bone
marrow to produce red blood cells. The kidneys help regulate red blood cell levels through
erythropoietin, ensuring sufficient oxygen transport capacity in the bloodstream.

The brainstem initiates breathing by signaling the diaphragm and rib muscles to contract,
expanding the lungs and allowing air to enter. Inside the lungs, oxygen diffuses into red
blood cells within the capillaries surrounding alveoli, tiny structures that provide a vast
surface area for optimal gas exchange. Oxygen-rich blood then travels through an extensive
cardiovascular network, propelled by the heart’s continuous pumping. This network spans the
entire body, delivering oxygen to every cell. The entire system works as a cohesive unit, and
any malfunction in this intricate process would compromise the body's functionality,
underscoring the vital coordination required to sustain life with each breath.

1. Gross Anatomy of the Heart and Its Vasculature
The heart is a muscular organ located in the thoracic cavity between the lungs, protected by
the ribcage and enclosed in a sac called the pericardium. It has four chambers: two upper atria
(right and left) and two lower ventricles (right and left). The heart walls consist of three
layers: the epicardium (outer layer), myocardium (muscular middle layer), and
endocardium (inner lining). Major blood vessels connect to the heart, including the superior
and inferior vena cava, which return deoxygenated blood to the right atrium; the
pulmonary arteries, which carry deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs;
the pulmonary veins, which bring oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium; and
the aorta, the main artery that distributes oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the rest
of the body.
The heart also has four valves that ensure unidirectional blood flow: the tricuspid valve
(between the right atrium and right ventricle), the pulmonary valve (between the right
ventricle and pulmonary artery), the mitral valve (between the left atrium and left ventricle),
and the aortic valve (between the left ventricle and aorta).

2. Functions of the Cardiovascular System
The cardiovascular system is essential for maintaining homeostasis and supporting cellular
functions. Its primary functions include transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells,
removing metabolic waste products like carbon dioxide and urea, and regulating body
temperature and pH. This system also plays a role in immune responses by circulating white
blood cells and antibodies. By delivering oxygen-rich blood to tissues and removing
deoxygenated blood, the cardiovascular system sustains cellular respiration and energy
production.

3. Two Main Sections in the Human Circulatory System: Systemic and Pulmonary
Circulation
Pulmonary Circulation: This circuit moves blood between the heart and the lungs.
Deoxygenated blood is pumped from the right ventricle through the pulmonary
