PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. What are chromosomes made of?
Chromosomes are made of proteins, and DNA, which is organized into
genes.
2. Research the differences between mitosis and binary fission. Identify at least
one difference and explain why it is significant.
Mitosis is the division that results in two daughter cells that have the
same chromosomes. Two new daughter cells are produced.
Binary fission, on the other hand, is asexual reproduction. In this process,
a single organism becomes two independent organisms.
The biggest difference between the two is the fact that mitosis is sexual,
while binary fission is asexual. The first one occurs in all eukaryotic
organisms, while the second one occurs in prokaryotic (bacteria).
3. Cancer is a disease related to uncontrolled cell division. Investigate two
known causes for these rapidly dividing cells and use this knowledge to
invent a drug that would inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
These changes in DNA interfere with a cell’s normal instructions. Which
causes this abnormal growth. These cancer cells also have replicative
immortality, and they ignore the body’s signal to stop dividing. Since they
spread to surrounding tissues, everything keeps getting worse.
I think inventing a drug wouldn’t be as effective as controlling blood
glucose levels. For some, cancer is strongly linked to this, so if these
levels can stay low, and under control, the outcome is usually more
