to visualize, diagnose, biopsy, collect specimens or assess
changes.
Bronchoscopy: What is it?
1. Instruct pt to be NPO for 6-12 hours prior
2. Obtain signed informed consent
3. Give sedative if ordered
4. Keep pt NPO till gag reflex returns
5. Monitor for hemorrhage and pneumothorax if bx was done
(but blood tinged mucous is normal)
Bronchoscopy: Nursing Considerations
, Collection of specimen, and then grown in stages for 48-72
hours to diagnose bacteria, selective antibiotic treatment, and
evaluate effectiveness of treatment.
Culture & Sensitivity: What is it?
1) Instruct pt on how to collect a good specimen:
- Cough deeply (not saliva)
- Early morning after mouth care is best
- Increase fluids if unsuccessful
(If pt cannot produce good specimen, bronchoscopy may be
used.)
2) Send sterile container with specimen to lab promptly after
collection.

pleural space to obtain specimens for diagnostic evaluation,
removal of fluid, or to instill medication.
