PSYC 201, LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT NAME: Trinity Bingaman
INSTRUCTOR: JACKSON
CHAPTER 5 IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENT
GENDER ROLES AND STEREOTYPES ON CHILDREN’S TV
For this activity, think back to two children’s tv shows you watched from 3-12
years old, or so. Think
about the various characters in those programs and how gender-specific roles
were assigned to gender-
specific characters. Some of the shows you watched might have been more
gender-neutral than others,
but think first about the ones you remember as highly gender-specific.
1) What are the names of the two tv show that you watched?
- Scooby Doo and Teen titans go
2) What age group were these shows mainly designed for (e.g., preschool,
middle childhood (6-9),
emerging adolescent (10-12)?
Middle childhood 6-9 as well as emerging adolecents.
3) Identify the stereotypical male character(s) in each show and the
characteristics that made them
specifically "male".
-Scooby Doo: Fred Jones, Vincent Van Gough. I am not including Shaggy because he
does not act like a stereotypical male character. Fred Jones acts like a stereotypical
male character because he acts like a leader, and he takes the initiative to build traps
for the villains, showing his better spatial ability. He acts more aggressively. Does not
show emotional sensitivity and expression as he does not show his feelings for
Daphne. Vincent Van Gough demonstrates a stereotypical male because he shows
anger and aggression often and spatial ability as he has to help the crew catch the
villains. In teen titans go, Robin, Cyborg, and Beast boy demonstrate a stereotypical
male characters by not showing effortful control, they are not good at regulating
their behavior. These characters suppress anger than happiness as well, and they all
show a great amount of aggression
4) Identify the stereotypical female character(s) in each show and the
characteristics that made them
specifically "female".
