4. QUESTION
4.1 Question 1
Read the following article: Mangaliso, M. P., Mangaliso, N. A., Ndanga, L. Z., & Jean-
Denis, H. (2022). Contextualizing organizational change management in Africa:
Incorporating the core values of Ubuntu. Journal of African Business, 23(4), 1029-1048.
Refer to Lesson 8 where Kotter’s and Browne’s organisation change models are
explained.
• Choose ONE of the models and critically discuss how the principles of Ubuntu,
as described by Mangaliso et al (2022) can be incorporated into the model to improve
the model's applicability to our South African business context and employees. (10)
• Develop your own graphical representation of the model (either Kotter’s or
Browne’s, depending on which model you choose) where you show how you suggest
Ubuntu principles can be incorporated. This will be similar to what Mangaliso et al
(2022) did with Lewin’s change model, see p.1041 of the article, but obviously will be
based on Kotter’s or Browne’s models, depending on which one you choose to
discuss. (5)
4.2 Question 2
Read the following article: Naude, P. (2019). Decolonising knowledge: Can Ubuntu
ethics save us from coloniality? Journal of Business Ethics, 159(1), 23-37. Refer to
Lesson 9 as well as Chapter 16 of Hughes which has been uploaded on the HRD4802
module site.
Write a position paper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Position_paper) where you explain
your viewpoint regarding a unique model of African business ethics for change
management.
• Do you support the development of a unique model of African business ethics
for use in a change management process.
OR
• Are you of the opinion that an ethics approach based on Western ethics and
only transferred or translated as described by Naude (2019) will be more successful for
application in a change management process in a South African organisation?
Motivate your viewpoints thoroughly. (5)
