Population – ANS The entire collection of elements of interest, usually "all" of some specific
group
Sample - ANSA subset of the population, usually noted by the number randomly selected.
Parameter – ANS Measurement that comes from the entire population.

Statistic – ANS Measurement that comes from the sample
* Both starts with S's
Descriptive Statistics – ANS Organizes, summarizes, or displays the collected (sample) data only
Inferential Statistics – ANS Use the descriptive statistics to make interpretation bout the data,
draw conclusions, and to make generalizations about the entire population or make prediction for
the future.
Experimental Study – ANS Apply a treatment and then observe its effects on the subjects.
Control groups are used for comparison purposes.
Example of Experimental Studies - ANS* Determine the effects of a new drug on cancer patients
( compared to group that receives placebo).
* Determine the effects of rewarding with dog treats while dog training.
Observational Study – ANS Observes and measure specific characteristics, without modifying
(imposing treatments on) the subject.
Examples of Observational Studies - ANS* Use food journal to log eating habits for a month.
* Record game stats during a sports game
