Journal
One incident where I have witnessed discrimination was when my sister came out. Of
course, no one in my family judged her and nothing has changed, besides her claiming her true
sexual orientation. To be quite honest, myself along with my step mom had a feeling but knew
she would talk when ready. My sister was the one who believed she would be discriminated
against. Although understandable, this hurt us all to think that she was afraid to be her true self
until just recently. It was not until recently that same sex marriage and LGBTQ rights were legal
or passed by the Supreme Court, and even now there are still those who have their own
opinions on it. Even with these positive world events, there are many individuals and couples
being discriminated against for choosing to live their lives how and with whom they want. My
younger sister lives in a small town in New York, where I would say sexual orientation is not
generally an issue.
When it comes to the Loden's wheel and my sister's situation, internally she was fighting
a battle of whether to come out as gay or to keep to herself. There would have been internal
factors as well as external factors such as the opinions of others or the media.
Being a young adult, I would think that she was taking all of these factors into accountability
before ultimately making her decision. I would hope that in my sisters future en-deavors, and
others, their rights would not change due to their sexual orientation. I hope that people become
more aware and positive impacts are made with the LGBTQ move-ment. Despite the positives
in recent decades regarding LGBTQ rights, queer, transgen-der, and non conforming individuals
are unfortunately still discriminated against. I hope in the years to come it becomes even more
accepted and individuals can continue to live their lives happily as their authentic selves. We are
all human and should uplift one another regardless of sexual orientation.
