Warehouse functions in a stockholding warehouse:
Receiving:
This process includes the unloading of incoming transport, the checking against purchase
orders and the registering the goods in the computer system. It may also include unpacking or
repacking of the goods and/or quality checks. After these processes, goods are stored in
warehouses.
Reserve storage:
Goods are normally stored in the reserve or back-up storage area (= largest space in
warehouses). This area has most of the warehouse inventory in identifiable locations. If
necessary, the goods from the reserve storage are moved directly to marshalling.
Order picking:
When an order is received from a customer, the goods must be picked up from the warehouse
in the correct quantity and at the right time. An order contains several order lines, each line
requires a certain quantity of a specific product:
Order line for a full load (eg pallet) Order can be picked up directly in the reserve storage
Order line for a less than full load (eg boxes) Order can be picked up in the order picking
Order line for small quantities Order can be picked up in de consolidated area (=
combination of the reserve and picking stock)
Sortation:
, For small orders, it can be efficient to group them together with a number of orders and threat
them as one order. In this case the picked batch should be sorted for shipment in an individual
order.
Collation, added value services and packing:
Goods must be collected and (usually) packed into complete customer orders ready for
transport. (Example: Goods can be taken to a packing station, where they are boxed. They can
be packed in stretch or shrink wrap on wooden pallets.) This process may also involve the final
production postponement services and value-added services such as kitting and labelling.
Marshalling and dispatch:
Goods are marshalled to form vehicle loads in the dispatch area and are then loaded on to
departing vehicles for further transport to the next “node” of the supply chain.
