Process of memory
Encoding - changing information so that it can be stored
Storage - holding information in the memory system, some of it for a lifetime.
Retrieval - recovering information from storage to use it.
You can retrieve memories in different ways:
Recognition - being able to retrieve the information after recognizing it. for example,
doing multiple-choice questions, you are given four possible answers and have to
decide which one is the right answer. Or seeing someone and being able to identify
who they are - which is different from trying to recall what someone looks like.
Cued recall - you try to remember a piece of information... it's on the tip of your
tongue... and then someone gives you a clue or cue and you suddenly remember it.
Free recall - when you are able to retrieve the information without any clues.
Information enters our memory through the five senses. This information has to be
changed into a language code that the brain understands.
ways of encoding information are:
Visually - visualizing something - table, chair etc
Acoustically - recalling noises - songs, voice etc.
Semantic - words and general information - how to make a pie.
old factory - How it smelt
tactile - how it felt
