Question 1:
Q: What did you learn that you did not know?

I learnt that dualism in the education system produces different
outcomes amongst learners which can have consequences for social
aspects. I learnt that poor quality education can lead to a poor
labour market, which increases the chances of having a poor quality
of education for future generations. I also learnt that there are 7
dimensions of poverty and each aspect has an effect on the quality
of education and can improve or decrease the opportunities
available for students. Another thing that I didn’t know, that I learnt
in this unit was about the topic “colonial education” and how it
influences the South African education system

Question 2:
Q: To what extent does the learning unit’s content help you
think differently as a future teacher about working in the
school context?

The content helped me think differently as a future teacher as I now
know that a learners success in the classroom does not depend
solely on their concentration in the classroom but also their
household factors as the home environment can have a negative
and a positive effect on a learner’s performance and therefore,
home circumstances should be considered when evaluating a
student’s performance, which I will add to my approach as a
teacher. I also learnt that collaboration in education is important and
therefore, going forward as a teacher, I will include collaboration in
my classroom activities amongst learners as well as collaborate with
other educators to create creative lessons for the benefit of all the
learners.

Question 3:
Q: What questions do you still have about the learning unit?

I only have one question and that is: how would you, as a teacher,
ensure that neighbourhood and home factors and conditions do not
negatively affect a child’s performance in their education and what
could you do, as a teacher, to be of support to children that have a
negative home environment or neighbourhood.
