Fetal Monitoring
PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________
Description of Procedure
Instruments are used to continously record the heartbeat of the fetus and the contractions of
the woman's uterus during labor
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
-Following rupture of membranes, spontaneously or
artificially. Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
-Preceding and subsequent to ambulation -Preparation of the client:
-Prior to and following administration of or a change in Monitor uterine activity
medication or analgesia -Palpate the uterine fundus to determine the size, lie,
-At time of expected peak of action of anesthesia and presentation of the fetus.
-Following vaginal examination -Place dopplers or other device over area of maximal
-After urinary catheterization intensity to auscultate FHR
-During abnormal or excessive uterine contractions -Count FHR before, during and after a contraction to
determine baseline rate.
-Auscultate FHR before, during and after a contraction to
determine FHR in response to the contraction.
Interpretation of Findings
Client Education
A reassuring FHR is 110 to 160 /min with Electronic fetal monitoring uses special equipment to measure the
increase and response of the fetus’ s heart rate to contractions of the uterus. It
decrease from baseline provides an ongoing record that can be read. Your ob-gyn or other
health care professional will review the electronic recording of the
