SECTION A
QUESTION 1
1.1 Motivation for the Professor’s Perspective on the Content of the Module
The professor‟s perspective that the ECD (Early Childhood Development) theories module
is dominated by the "dominant discourse" is valid, particularly in the context of
transformation in higher education. The term "dominant discourse" refers to the prevailing
worldview that often reflects the interests and perspectives of dominant groups, especially
in post-colonial contexts. The professor's argument is grounded in the recognition that
educational curricula often privilege Western epistemologies, while marginalizing non-
Western, indigenous, and diverse ways of knowing and thinking (Teo, 2014).
Studies in critical pedagogy and transformative education support the professor's
argument. Giroux (2011) emphasizes that curricula, particularly in Western institutions,
often reflect and reproduce dominant cultural, social, and political values. By maintaining
the focus on a singular narrative, these educational systems inadvertently marginalize
