CHAPTER GUIDE

Use of the “What would you do if …?” Vignette

Many Canadians do not realize that globalization is impacting them in many ways every
day. The corruption involved with selling counterfeit and pirated products is one
example. The self-interest ethic should be recognized where an individual, in this case
Giorgio, could financially benefit. But other stakeholders are harmed, for example,
Canadian business retailers and their employees. It could be argued that the workers in
developing countries have benefited, but they are likely working for low wages and in
poor working conditions. Also, personal ethics and responsibilities are illustrated, which
are often overlooked in issues in which other stakeholders are identified as behaving
inappropriately.

Intellectual property is involved and was discussed as aspect of the right to private
property in Chapter 3.

Refer to Your advice to Giorgio… .

, LO14.1 Defining Globalization and the Implications for Business

Define globalization and related issues.

Note the “general” definition of globalization and the issue dimensions of it that are of
interest in this book: economic, political and social, or cultural. Environmental
globalization has also been added as a fourth dimension of globalization. There are many
definitions of globalization. Theses ones were selected, as they are applicable to
Canadian business ethics.

Responsibility for Ethics 14.1: The United Nations Global Compact

The Global Compact website is worth visiting: http://www.unglobalcompact.org/.

The Principles are available at
http://www.unglobalcompact.org/AboutTheGC/TheTenPrinciples/index.html.

Canadian participants (including corporations) can be searched at
https://unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/participants. Under “Countries” select Canada
(212 results on May 15, 2024).

Discussion Questions:
1. Why would a Canadian corporation join the Global Compact?
2. Now that you are aware that a particular corporation is a participant, does it
change your views of the corporation?
3. Do the “Principles” cover all aspects of a corporation’s responsibilities? For
example, what about product safety?

LO14.2 Globalization and International Non-governmental Organizations (INGOs)

Assess the role international non-governmental organizations play in influencing
business.

The definition of INGOs is built on the definition of NGOs in chapter 12. Sometimes it is
difficult to distinguish between an NGO and an INGO, but usually the INGO has some
sort of international or global scope of operation.

Responsibility for Ethics 14.2: Examples of INGOs

More information on the INGOs listed is available at:

Amnesty International: http://www.amnesty.org/
