Task 1:
The effects of the temperature of amylase on the breakdown of
starch.
Hypothesis:
As the reaction temperature of amylase and starch solution increases, the reaction rate of
amylase and starch will increase.
Aim:
The aim of the experiment is to investigate the effect of temperature of the enzyme amylase
on the breakdown of starch.
Objective:
The objective of my experiment is that i will be testing the effect of temperature of amylase
and how it breaks down starch. I will test this by controlling the temperature to 4 different
temperature which would be at 0oC, 20oC, 30oC, 35oC and 65oC it will be altered by using
ice cubes for the cold temperature and a heating apparatus for the hot temperature. This is
done simply to find out the temperature at which the enzyme amylase is most effective at
digesting starch.
Variable:
Independent variable | temperature
Dependent variable | time - it takes for the starch to be broken
down by amylase
Controlled variable | iodine solution
Rationale of the project:
The reason why I chose this experiment is because I am eager to find out how the enzyme
amylase can breakdown starch using iodine. My experiment will look at the effect of
temperature on the enzyme amylase. Amylase is an enzyme in which is found in saliva ,
small intestine and pancreas and its role is that it is a catalyst that breaksdown starch into
maltose as part of the digestive system.
Through this experiment , the activity of the amylase enzyme will be measured in order to
see how long it takes for the starch to disappear by testing for it with iodine. Iodine is used
to test for the presence of starch , as it dissolves in aqueous solution that has starch . which
