i. Monitor the safety of the newborn’s crib. The space between
the mattress and sides of the crib should be less than 2
fingerbreadths. The slats on the crib should be no more than 5.7
cm (2.25 in) apart.
ii. The newborn’s crib or playpen should be away from window
blinds and drapery cords. Newborns can become strangled
in them.
