1. DDE Devices These transfer information automatically from
docu-
ments such as a form or bar code
2. Bar code reader This is a DDE Device. A barcode is a group of
vertical
lines of different widths. A Wand or a fixed
scanner read barcodes into the computer.
3. Smart Card Credit and debit cards both have a magnetic
strip
which can hold 60 characters of information.
The in- formation is encoded on the strip when
the card is made. To gather information from
the card it is swiped through a machine which
quickly reads the magnet- ic pattern. Swiping
transfers account information and cost of
goods into the banking system called
'Electronic funds transfer at point of sale'
(EFTPOS)
