The GCSE French Foundation Tier Paper 4 Writing exam for Friday, 24 May 2024, will assess
your ability to write in French across a variety of contexts. This exam lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and is
designed to test your ability to communicate in writing, using the French language accurately and
effectively.
What is questioned in the exam:
The Writing exam typically consists of two main sections, with a mix of short and long writing
tasks.
1. Section 1: Structured Writing Tasks (50 marks)
This section includes a variety of shorter writing tasks, usually requiring you to respond in
French to specific instructions. Examples of what you might be asked to do:
o Write short responses: These may be questions that you need to answer in full
sentences. For example, you may be asked to describe your daily routine, your family,
or your hobbies.
o Complete sentences or write a short text: The tasks may ask you to complete a
sentence with the correct word, or to write a few sentences about a given topic (such
as your school or a holiday).
2. Section 2: Extended Writing Task (50 marks)
The extended writing task will require you to write a longer piece of writing (about 150-200
words). You will be given a choice of questions, and you must select one to answer. The
topics may include:
o Describing your daily life or routine
o Talking about your family, friends, and relationships
o Discussing holidays and travel
o Expressing opinions about different subjects like school or hobbies
o Writing about future plans or aspirations
