1.1.1 Create a live connection to a data.
How do we do a live connection to data? - --Open a new tableau instance
from desktop
-Go to Connect Menu on left hand side, and choose file or server or saved
data source to connect to
- 1.1.2 Explain the differences between using live connections versus
extracts. - -Live connection--> offers real time updates, relies on the
database for all queries, queries are only as fast as database itself, more
variables at play when using live connection, are not optimized.
Extracts --> are snapshots of data, are optimized, faster to recall
visualization, needs to be refreshed, are more efficient, etc..
- 1.1.3 Create an extract (find out easier answer) - -find easier way to do
this
- 1.1.4 Save metadata properties in a .TDS - --go to the sheet
-right click on the data source
-select 'Add to Saved Data Sources'
-make sure the end of the file ends in .TDS
- 1.1.5 Create a data source that uses multiple connections - --Connect to
the primary data source
-Create a worksheet
-Create a new worksheet
-Select Data --> New Data Source
-Connect to new data source, drag tables into data relationship window
-Repeat steps 3-5 to add as many data sources and worksheets as desired

- 1.2.2 Add joins and unions. How do we join? - --connect to data sources
-Drag table to canvas
-Double click first table, go to open
-Drag another table to the canvas
-click on join icon

double click New Union to setup the union
-Drag a table into Union Dialog box
-Select another table and drag it below the first table

-Small datasets with clear relationships between tables
-When performance is a concern; relationships improve performance by
reducing number of tables that need to be joined.
When to choose joins:
-when you need to combine multiple datasets with different keys
-merging tables with different structures
-when you need flexibility and control over merged data
-when you need to merge data from different databases, spreadsheets, etc..
- 1.3.1 Rename a data field - -Multiple Methods:
1) Right click the data field and rename
2) Click and hold the data field name, until the name changes into the same
text field, then type in new name and hit enter
3) Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Enter, until the name changes, then type in new
name and hit enter
4: -Go to Data Source page --> see bold column titles, those are data fields
-hover mouse over drop down menu arrow
-click on arrow --> Select Rename --> rename your field
-Enter. OR you can just double click on the column title and rename there.
- 1.3.2 Assign an alias to a data value - -1) Go to data pane --> right click,
select Aliases
2) Select a member and enter a new name
3) Save changes by clicking OK (on Tableau Desktop) or X (on Tableau
Server/Cloud)
- 1.3.3 Assign a geographic role to a data field - -There are two ways to
assign a geographic role to a data field:
1) Right-click on the field name in the Data pane and choose Geographic
role.
