In keeping with step 5 of McKenzie & Pinger's six-step model described in An Introduction to
Community & Public Health, you must select a focus for your process innovation based on
the information gathered so far. This focus will provide the first criterion for narrowing
process innovation options. Use this worksheet to decide which process innovation might be
the most successful in Chinle.
1. Formulate process innovation options. Describe your purpose for the process
innovation and the reason for selecting it. Refer to the "Community Needs Assessment
Worksheet" and the Chinle Service Unit Profile provided in the course to inform your
answer.
Hózhó Health – a family-focused Navajo health program centered on restoring balance and
harmony in the physical health of Navajo families living in Chinle through interactive
community activities, personalized health plans for individuals, and family health
management navigators. I chose this innovation because it is the most comprehensive in
addressing the problem and it is most in alignment with traditional spiritual practices and
incorporates those practices into the health plan.
2. Describe three process innovations. Describe three options for improving the
healthcare delivery process for addressing obesity issues in Chinle. Draw on the case
studies provided in the course to find ideas. Use the "Five Imperatives for Improving
Healthcare" resource provided in the course to select high-impact approaches. Use
Health care disruption: Thinking broadly about regulation and innovation provided in the
course to direct your innovations toward creating a culture of innovation and using ideas
from other industries.
, - The use of health navigators to guide patients, answer non-
clinical questions, and connect to resources; keeps emergency room
attendance down.
- The use of tablets to provide telemedicine and grocery delivery
options to those who need it most; if no tablets are available or if
patient cannot use tablet for whatever reason they are given access
to a hotline where they can talk to a nurse and do all the things a
tablet can do at any time.
- Regularly scheduled visits or the options to schedule visits with
either traditional medicine men or physicians or both
- Regular in-person check-ins by navigators to physical lay hands
on the patients and give them a sense of human touch; preferably by
Navajo navigators
- Goal is to address the social determinants of obesity and
encourage patients to actively combat obesity by giving them the
resources and activities necessary to do so.
Process innovation 3 – Eliminate waste and treat in-clinic
Eliminate waste in operations. Have patients reports on their diet,
social behaviors, etc. when they visit the service unit and give
suggestions based on their report; schedule follow up appointments
while at the hospital and give patients physical paper handouts on
topics they’re interested in learning about
3. Compare the three options by describing how each meets the following
criteria:
• addresses urgent need (relevant)
• uses available resources (feasible)
• integrates cultural considerations (sensitive)
