MI TREATMENT
IMMEDIATE ACTION ONCE STABLE
• supplemental oxygen
• morphine
◦ reduce anxiety and pain
◦ this will reduce HR and oxygen demand
• aspirin
◦ reduce development of clot
• thrombolysis
POST MI MEDS
• these will be prescribed post MI and will be instructed to be taken indefinitely
• beta blockers
◦ reduces hearts oxygen demand
▪ by redcuing HR and force of contraction
• nitrates
◦ dilate vessels
• anticoagulants
◦ heparin/warfarin
◦ prevents further blood clots
• statins
◦ reduce blood cholesterol
◦ reduce atherosclerotic build up in arteries
• ACE inhibitors
◦ lower BP and have been shown to reduce damaging remodelling that can
happen post MI
POST MI PROCEDURES
• coronary angiogram
◦ performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory
◦ patient is kept awake the entire procedure
◦ given lidocaine to numb/desensitise affected areas
◦ contrast dye into circulation via femoral/radial artery
◦ view coronary vessels under live x ray
◦ this is to check where vessels are occluded
• this is what will be used to determine what further treatment is needed
