, Abstract
This thesis explores the experiences of Ukrainian and Syrian refugees in Vienna, aiming to
understand the challenges they face in integrating into Austrian society. The presence of
refugees in Vienna has become increasingly contentious in recent years, with negative
stereotypes and prejudices hindering their ability to be welcomed and accepted by the local
community. This study seeks to close knowledge gaps and reduce biases against Ukrainian
and Syrian refugees by investigating their specific experiences in Vienna and proposing
strategies to improve their integration.
The main research question of this study is "What are the specific experiences of Ukrainian
and Syrian refugees in Vienna?" This question is explored through several sub-questions,
including how the refugees experience Vienna, how their experiences may change over time,
what similarities and differences exist between the two groups, and what factors and
circumstances may contribute to their comfort and integration in Vienna.
To answer these questions, the study employs a methodological approach that includes
interviews with Ukrainian and Syrian refugees in Vienna and a literature review of existing
research on refugee integration. The findings of this study contribute to the broader discourse
on refugee integration, providing insights into the unique experiences of Ukrainian and Syrian
refugees and proposing actionable steps to improve their integration in Vienna. By
understanding the experiences and challenges faced by these refugees, this study aims to
contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society in Austria.
