Criteria to consider when choosing a type of Internet connection
• Mobility • Cap
• Speed of the line or connection • Shaped and Unshaped
Bandwidth vs Speed
• Bandwidth determines how much data can be downloaded or uploaded
• Speed determines how fast the data can be uploaded or downloaded on your device

Bandwidth is expressed as a bit rate and measured in bits per second (bps)
WIRED VERSUS WIRELESS CONNECTIONS
Wired Connections
• Permanent digital connection to Internet through a fixed landline
• More bandwidth for downloading than uploading
• Wired connections - ADSL
• Costs include a monthly ISP cost and a fixed monthly cost for the line rental
Advantages
• Use line for phone calls and Internet access at the same time
• Permanent connection which is always on
• WiFi connectivity
Disadvantages
• May not be available in your area
• Data speed may be limited by physical location
• Not mobile
Modem / Router
Data Terminating Devices that use different technologies to send/receive data over different media
Wireless connections
Dedicated WiFi technology ( iBurst, Neotel )
Only access this network using a modem supplied by the company. Limited coverage
The existing cellular technology ( Vodacom, MTN, Cell C )
Implemented by a cellular communications company using existing infrastructure
Advantages
• Mobile access 24/7 to the Internet from anywhere in the world
• Use smartphone or tablet to access the Internet
• No cables to connect to the Internet
Disadvantages and Limitations
• Limited or slow access if in area with poor coverage
• No cables to connect to the Internet
• Online privacy or security could be an issue
