MFT INTERVIEW EXAM QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS

What brought you into this field? What made you decide to become a Marriage
and Family Therapist? - ANSWER I notice that my reason why is a little
different than the rest of the applicants, as for I have never been to therapy. But
when I a teenager, my older cousin who was like my sister went to college. She
came back home during the Christmas break, and I realized that something was
not right with her. Then she came and told me her story: she had been sexually
assaulted. Me being young and not knowing what to do, I was just a listening
ear and comforted her the best I could. She eventually sought help through
therapy services, and I could see that she was beginning to be like her old self,
and I was amazed by her growth. When I came to college, through friends and
roommates stories and research, it dawned on me how often sexual assault
occurs. I noticed a need for these trauma survivors to seek services and a need
for mental health care providers in rural areas. So, I found myself in a rabbit
hole looking at different careers in therapy and counseling. Being an HDFS
major, I was surrounded by LMFTs; my mentors are MFTs. The more I learned
and became involved the more I fell in love with the idea of being an LMFT and
knew this was a path for me.

Tell me about yourself. - ANSWER --Grew up in a small town in East Tx,
went to junior college in my hometown then transferred to tech where I recently
graduated in HDFS with a minor in CFAS

What would you describe as your strengths? - ANSWER I think my
classmates/colleagues/supervisor would describe me as someone who pays
attention to detail. I like to feel like I'm prepared for any tasks that I do.

I like to keep an open mind and I feel like that has been beneficial for me
throughout my life.

, Time management is something I take pride in. I received my associates within
a year of graduating high school and my bachelor's within 2.5 years of being
here at Tech. This took much self-discipline and efficient time management.

Flexible, I tend to be an easy-going person, I'm a team player because I'm open
to other suggestions. I don't think that it's important who comes up with the
idea, but more about whatever idea is best for the group.

What do you see as your weaknesses? - ANSWER I'm reserved and shy. I am
introverted, period, and quite frankly, this is somewhat out of my comfort zone
at this time, but I'm owning it and pushing through. haha! Sometimes I struggle
with being direct and outspoken, both in my personal and professional life. It's
been a work in process. I knew where this would put me in the backseat in the
therapy room with a client and not being able to take charge of the session.
Speaking with mentors of mine, I have been able to pick up some tools to be
more directive in my personal life.

Tell me about a mistake and how you handled it. - ANSWER Not getting a
passing grade in a class.
The next semester, I took a complete different approach: I studied harder,
sought more help, got myself a tutor, became really rigid in my scheduling, and
averaged over the class average on every one of my exams.

"A few semesters ago I took a required math class. I didn't take it very seriously
because for one I struggle with math and for two I couldn't think of one scenario
when I would use the quadratic formula in my future. My failing grades on my
first two exams gave me a reality check. I'd even jeopardized my scholarship
status. I knew I had to get my act together. I spent the rest of the semester
making up for it, got a tutor, ended up getting an A in the class (a miracle I
