How to Answer:

Question 1: 4 marks

This question is asking you what 2 things you can gather from the source

- read source twice, highlighting and annotating key points/links to question
- pick out 2 things you can infer from the source
- pick out 2 details that back up your points

Inference = what you can find in the source/your point

Detail = quote/evidence from the source that shows this

‘One thing I can infer from Source X is….’ ‘A detail that tells me this is…’

‘A second thing I can infer from this source is…’ ‘The detail showing me this is…’



Question 2: 12 marks

This question is asking you to explain the cause or consequence of a key event

- read question twice, highlighting and annotating key points/links to question
- use stimulus points given, but introduce your own ideas too
- create a line of reasoning, continue throughout your essay
- explain causes or consequences in detail
- at the end of paragraphs, link back to question

Question 3a: 8 marks

Question wants you to analyse the usefulness of 2 sources about the same focus point

- read question twice, highlighting and annotating key points/links to question
- use: content of source, provenance and your own knowledge
- 2 paragraphs: one for each source
- how does the content make it useful? use quotes and evidence
- how does the provenance make it useful?
- you can counter your argument, but your argument must be stronger
- at end of paragraph, explain WHY the source is/is not useful

Content = what is written in the source – quotes, evidence

Provenance = where the source comes from and when – diary, newspaper

‘Source X is useful for this enquiry because it includes…’

‘Source X is useful to a certain extent…’

‘As Source X is a …, this makes it more/less useful…’



Question 3b: 4 marks

This question is asking how two interpretations are different

- read both twice, highlighting and annotating key points/links to question
- no own knowledge needed
- talk about both interpretations!
- must include evidence from both interpretations
- 1 paragraph

‘The main difference between Interpretation X and Interpretation Y is that…’



Question 3c: 4 marks

Question wants to know why the interpretations are different

- read both twice, highlighting and annotating key points/links to question
