1. After viewing “Open to the Public” (1) pick two ideas from the video that
you liked and explain what they have to say about the importance of
public space in modern urban life. How has Covid 19 impacted ideas
about public spaces?
A place open to the public is any place open to the public or any place to which the public is invited,
and in any privately-owned place of business whether an admission or entry fee is charged. The
video the public space should be open for all and free. It is a place without discrimination, a place that
does not belong to anyone and is open to the outside. We have many such places around us. For
example, libraries, parks, and other public places. People gathered in this place can speak freely. You
can propagate ideology and politics. Just like Jacob said “eyes on the street” The opening of public
places also provides a reference place for the society. From these places, people can observe the
living conditions of residents. The small social environment. Regulating the use of public spaces and
maintaining physical distance are key policy measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect
public health. Half of the world's population is required to stay at home or limit movement in public
spaces, and cities known for their active street life, such as New York, now look like ghosts as city
residents stay at home for the collective public good.

2. What is a third place? Name a third place that is important for you in
your daily life. Explain why? After viewing 2 clips about Starbucks (2,3)
answer the following: is Starbucks a third place? Do their coffee shops
create a sense of community? Why or Not.
Third place is a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg to refer to places where
people spend time between home ("first" place) and work ("second" place). They are
places where we exchange ideas, have a good time and build relationships. The
library is a very important third place in life for me. No tickets needed, very friends to
read books together in the library. No need to worry about time limits, much less
buying any merchandise. Even they offer free events you can attend. Simon mention
that Starbucks sharing drinks with everyone taking in the décor and music he
realized Starbucks was selling more coffees and customers were drinking it up.
Starbucks is a store, which is designed to sell coffee. He named himself as the third
place because it provides convenience for the guests. Imagine that you enter
Starbucks and sit inside without buying anything, would you feel uncomfortable.
Even you feel that buying a drink and sitting inside listening to music is a way to
enjoy life. Businesses don't do things without benefits
3. What are some of the negative impacts of virtual third spaces according to
Allie Volpe’s in "the death and post rebirth of third spaces." Do you agree?
Have you had a positive experience with virtual third spaces?
“Third places are not necessarily places where you're going to get into a really
serious conversation, but there’s always the potential for finding people to talk to, or
at least sensing a commonality,” Christensen says. The third place is a comfortable
place for me to release stress. Human contact is necessary. After the pandemic, we
communicated online to work and study. But if the third place is also included in the
video. It should not meet our needs. Hugs, eye contact, kisses are some of the
normal contact needs in our lives. When we need comfort, video communication
alone won't help. We need to be in touch with people and the third place whether
public or commercial they are a social place in our busy lives. To get to know
