Peripheral Arterial Disease education- is a chronic occlusion of the vessels. It reduced blood
supply and person develops ischemia. The arterial blood flow is damage and valves are not
competent. It also reduces blood supply to bilateral lower extremities.
Interventions-ensure patient is on a low-fat cholesterol, low-calorie diet. Patient will be
administered medications such as STATINS, lipid-lowering agents, pentoxifylline (pain, muscles),
and thrombolytics (break up clots).
Peripheral Vascular Disease education-An arterial blood clot that can become an embolus if it
breaks off and travel.
Interventions-Anticoagulants (blood thinners), thrombolytics (clot buster), thrombectomy or
embolectomy. Patient have to receive heparin IV bolus 5000U to Coumadin therapy. Patient is
order lab work every 6 hours.
Aortic Aneurysm signs and symptoms-Can be none in the early stage. Back/flank pain,
pulsating abdominal mass, severe back pain or shock.
Myocardial Infarction Education-Death of a heart muscle caused by artery blockage and
decrease blood supply.
Interventions-Patient will receive oxygen first. Aspirin, morphine sulfate (respiratory
depression), Thrombolytics, vasodilators, nitrates, beta blockers (blood thinners) and
antidysrhythmic. Patient will be put on bedrest, glucose control, fluid restrictions, low sodium
diet, clear liquids and no caffeine diet. Patient will also get weighed daily.
Lab Test-ECG, myoglobin, CK-MB, C-reactive, and magnesium.
Coronary Artery Disease education-An obstruction of coronary artery blood flow from
atherosclerosis. A decrease blood flow to the heart.
Risk Factors-low-cholesterol diet, lipid-lowering agent and low dose aspirin. Men is
recommended and women over 60.
Cardiac Catheterization-A procedure used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. A
catheter is inserted in an artery/vein in your groin, neck or arm and threaded through your
blood vessels to heart.
Varicose Veins signs and symptoms-Disfigurement of lower extremities, dull pain, edema and
ulceration.
Carotid Endarterectomy-opening up the artery and removing the plaque.
