HEENT Assessment Questions & Answers 2024/2025 How do we assess the neck? - ANS-We auscultate major blood vessels Why do we auscultate the neck? - ANS-To detect bruits**, which are abnormal arterial sounds, similar to murmurs, cause be increased turbulence over major blood vessels, such as the carotid artery. Why do bruits occur? - ANS-When an artery is partially obstructed or distended, which prevents blood flow from moving straight through the vessel What are some questions to ask before doing a HEENT assessment? - ANS-Do you have headaches, problems with frequent headaches? Do you wear glasses/contacts? What problems do you have with vision? Any recent head trauma or history of head injury? Have you had a stroke? What do we assess for in head position assessment? - ANS-Should be in line with neck (stroke may affect this), facial droop (stroke or other neuro problem) Normocephalic, hydrocephalic What does normocephalic mean? - ANS-normal size and shape of head *also assess scalp at this point* What does hydrocephalic mean? - ANS-enlarged head, build up of fluid! *Hydrocephalic*= build up of CSF in brain! What do we assess the facial features for? - ANS-Symmetry of: eyelids, eyebrows, nasolabial folds, mouth and facial droop All of the above being unsymmetrical may indicate seizure/neuro problem How do we assess the temporomandibular joint? - ANS-Palpate the TMJ for crunching (crepitus) or popping. **assessing the TMJ also assesses for proper function of what cranial nerve?
