Medical/Surgical/Telemetry (POM)
1. Beginning of shift - ANS-1. Check in with Charge RN, HCA, and Telemetry Technician,
tell them name and shift length
2. 2. Check in with CNA and RN in each pod
3. 3. On 7am-11 or 7pm-11 shifts restock gloves, alcohol and bleach wipes, and isolation
carts then blanket warmer and linen cart
4. 4. Then check-in with staff
5. Can new interns take a leave of absence? - ANS-No
6. Cardiac Monitoring Equipment - ANS-Cardiac monitor or telemetry box
7. Electrodes/ECG Tabs
8. Lead wires
9. Cardiac Monitoring Procedure - ANS-1. Explain that the electrodes monitor heart rate
10. 2. Attach wires to electrodes
11. 3. Place electrodes on the patient
12. 4. Avoid bones, hair, or movement
13. 5. Connect lead wires to ECG
14. • RA white
15. • LA black
16. • RL green
17. • LL red
18. • V1 brown
19. "white goes on the right, clouds over grass, smoke over fire"
20. 6. Turn on monitor and notify RN
21. Ending the shift - ANS-1. Inform Charge RN, HCA and Telemetry Technician that you will
no longer be on the floor
22. 2. Check out with each CNA and RN in each of the pods
23. 3. Inform new interns of circumstances and hand over tasks
24. 4. Sign out of the binder
25. Medication stations - ANS-Do not disturb nurse or RT preparing medication at the PYXIS
medication stations
26. Nerve block - ANS-DO NOT ambulate
27. Next steps - ANS-1. Clearance
28. 2. ID badge and Parking Permit
29. 3. Complete Shadow Shift and Competency Checklist
30. --> Between November 15 and December 1
31. --> Through Scheduling form
32. --> Must sign-in to the Shadowing timesheet, sign out with intern verifying
33. 4. Start as Intern
34. Normal BP - ANS-Ideal: 120/80
35. Normal range: 90-130 mmHg systolic / 60-85 mmHg diastolic
