OCTOBER NOVEMBER PORTFOLIO SEMESTER 2 2024
DUE DATE: 30 OCTOBER 2024

Question 1: Ethical Approaches to Mark Pachio's Actions

In analyzing the actions of Mark Pachio, particularly his intentional handball, we can
apply three major philosophical approaches: consequentialism, deontology, and
virtue ethics. Each of these frameworks offers a unique perspective on the situation
involving Shibobo FC and Maluti FC.

1. Consequentialism (Utilitarianism)

Consequentialism, especially utilitarianism, assesses the morality of an action based on
its consequences. According to this view, an action is deemed morally acceptable if it
leads to the greatest overall happiness or minimizes harm for the most people involved.
In Pachio's case, his deliberate handball could be interpreted as a calculated move
intended to benefit his team, Shibobo FC, by preventing a goal and improving their
chances of advancing to the semi-finals—a goal they achieved after winning in the
shootout.

From the perspective of Shibobo FC, this consequentialist rationale justifies Pachio's
actions. They might argue that, although his conduct violated the rules, the positive
outcome for their team makes it acceptable. In their eyes, the immediate penalty Pachio
received (a red card and a penalty kick) was a fair trade-off for the larger benefit of
advancing in the competition.

Conversely, Maluti FC views Pachio's actions negatively, believing that they undermine
the integrity of the game. They contend that the handball introduced dishonesty, which
detracts from the values of fair play.
