What are some factors that affect mobility?
age, injury, medical conditions
What should you assess to determine a patient's mobility status?
posture/gait, ROM, pain, assistive devices, psychosocial (relating to the interrelation of social
factors and individual thought and behavior
What is lordosis?
spine curving inward at the lower back
What is kyphosis?
upper back bulging out and neck too forward (hunchback)
, What is swaying back?
when the lower back is curved inward and the neck is straight but held back (kinda like a duck)
What is scoliosis?
when a person's spine is shaped like an S
What is forward head?
head is pushed forward
What are some kinds of musculoskeletal injuries?
sport related injuries, occupational related injuries
How can you prevent MS injuries?
proper equipment, conditioning, body mechanics, and interventions
How do you treat MS injuries?
rest for 24-72 hours, ice on for 20 mins then 20 mins off 3-5 times per day, compress (reduce
swelling), elevate injury above the heart level
Patho for Parkinson's Disease
there is an imbalance between dopamine and acetylcholine and basal ganglia
What is basal ganglia?
involved in the initiation and coordination of movement
What is the incidence?
the occurrence of new cases of disease or injury in a population over a period of time
Clinical Manifestations of Parkinsons:
stooped posture, short shuffling steps, arms flexed at elbows and wrists, facial and lower limb
tremors, mask-like face, hips and knees slightly flexed, rigidity in spine, dyskinesia, chorea,
dystonia, "pill rolling", drooling, handwriting gets smaller, slurred speech, hard time swallowing
etc, echolalia (repeat words), autonomic dysfunction (involve body movement), orthostatic
hypotension, trouble sleeping, memory issues
