Center Summary
There is a lack of affordable after school care in the area. After school enrichment
programs improve academic outcomes, as well offering low cost childcare options for working
parents. We are seeking $5,000 for additional staffing and technology, and program supplies.
The lack of affordable quality after school enrichment programs in urban areas is well
documented. Many local parents cannot afford the cost of private after school programs, and
local schools have begun charging tuition, which is a burden many low income families cannot
afford. According to Think Outside the Clock 9(2011) “School buildings are often the nerve
center of after-school and summer activity” (p. 47).
The benefits of afterschool programs are many and the most important is preventing
summer learning loss and giving children “an academic boost when they return to school” (Think
Outside the Clock, 2011, p. 48). The specific purpose of the grant for Catching The Dream
Learning Center is to implement or expand programs outside of regular school hours. This will
help our mostly low income families maintain employment, and will improve developmental
outcomes for our students, and prevent summer learning loss and give children an academic
boost when they return to school in September” (Think Outside the Clock, 2011, p. 48).
The enrichment program will offer students both academic/educational and enrichment
activities. Activities would include homework help, assistance and practice with reading, youth
development, counseling, project-based learning, art, music, technology education programs,
service learning, character education and recreation programs that are designed to reinforce and
