- List and Define the 8 elements of art in Chapter 3
- List and Define the 6 principles of design in Chapter 4
Elements
Line - A long, narrow mark, usually made by drawing with a tool or brush. Lines can be of
various thickness, but length always predominates over height or depth.
Shape - The area within the outline of an object or figure, whether two-dimensional or
three-dimensional.
Mass - The physical bulk of a solid body of material that has height, width, and depth.
Space - Indefinable, general receptacle of all things – the seemingly empty space around us.
Time and Motion - Fourth dimension, in which events occur in succession; become major
elements in visual media such as film, video, and some works of sculpture.
Light - Visible by the radiant energy we call light. Sunlight, or natural light, although perceived
as white or clear, actually contains all the colors of light that make up the visible part of the
electromagnetic spectrum; it can be directed, reflected, refracted, diffracted, or diffused.
Color - A component of light, color affects us directly by modifying our thoughts, moods,
actions, and even our health.
Texture - Refers to the tactile qualities of surfaces, or to the visual representation of those
qualities.
Principles
Unity and Variety - The appearance or condition of oneness. Variety acts to counter unity and
provides diversity.
Balance - The achievement of equilibrium, in which acting influences are held in check by
opposing forces.
Emphasis and Subordination - To draw our attention to an area; artist use directional forces to
influence the way we look at a work of art.
Directional Forces - Paths for the eye to follow, provided by actual or implied lines
Repetition and Rhythm - Visual elements can give a composition unity, continuity, flow, and
emphasis; Refers to any structure of dominant and subordinate elements in sequence.
Scale and Proportion - The size relation of one thing to another. Proportion is the size
relationship of parts to a whole; size and shape of a two-dimensional picture plane.
