Chapter 3 water

Section 1 ice, water, water vapour
Solid substance= ice, in a solid all the molecules have their own fixed position. The molecules
are not entirely still, they are moving back and forth.
Liquid= water, in a liquid the molecules do not have a fixed position. They can move past one
another in any direction.
Gas= water vapour, the molecules in gas move freely and independently of one another. They
spread out to fill all the space that the gas is confined in
These three states are also referred to as ‘’phases’’

, Cohesion and adhesion
Cohesion= molecules of the same substance are attracting each other.
Adhesion= molecules of other substances attracting each other.
If you dip one end of a sugar cube into water, the cube will draw op water until it’s wet
trough. This is because the adhesive forces are much greater than the cohesive forces.
This means that the water is soon attracted into the small gaps between the sugar granules.
